Saving more space with the Kindle

Here’s a service that I would love for Amazon to offer though:
I would love to be able to return all those paperback and/or hardcover books that I purchased (often from Amazon.com) in the past to them. For each book they could then
- give me an electronic version, and
- offer the book for sale on the used market
This could turn out to be a potential win-win deal.
List and sell your used hardcovers and paperbacks on Amazon. Create a seller account and list them. It only takes a few minutes.
That’s an interesting idea. I’m not sure how it would work, technically, though. How can “take back” a file?
I understand that I can list them for sale myself. Here I am less interested in selling my books than saving space by replacing books with electronic copies.
Essentially, I’d like to replace a number of my old books with electronic copies. I believe there are already services out there that will scan books for me and provide me with electronic versions. That tends to be an expensive, slow process.
I would like the idea of just sending Amazon a book and receiving in exchange version of the book for the Kindle. I don’t much care what they do with the old book. Well, as long as they don’t send it back.
