Super Happy Developers

Came across SupperHappyDevHouse:

SuperHappyDevHouse has become the Bay Area’s premier monthly hackathon event that combines serious and not-so-serious productivity with a fun and exciting party atmosphere. Come to the DevHouse to have fun and get things done!

I wonder if there is such a thing in the Seattle area. Don’t see a reason why that couldn’t be the case…

A Reason to Read Software Engineering Notes

Filed under: Software — Alex @ 7:28 pm

From Hacking with Love:

I am a “hacker,” and I use the term deliberately. I try not to glamorize what I do beyond what it really is. I try not to deceive myself or anyone else about what I can do. I don’t write code by rote application of rules or processes or architecture or passion. I do what feels right, work hard and respond as best I can. And, every strong SE I’ve ever met does this, too.

Of course an expert in his or her chosen field has a lot of experience and knowledge, so he or she will likely have lots of good reasons for why something feels right. Software Engineering? Hacking? Does there need to be a boundary? Different approaches for different needs?

giving up on movielink

Filed under: Uncategorized — Alex @ 7:05 pm

I have been using movielink for quite a while to rent movies. It started out a good experience, but has become unsatisfying enough that I will likely not use it much in the future. Here are some of the reasons:

  • I am finding their selection increasingly limiting.
  • I cannot access their site, unless I use Internet Explorer.
  • I cannot play their movies, unless I am using a MS-Windows-based system.
  • I have been experiencing quite a few connection/download problems over the past couple months.

I am now giving Netflix a try. So far I really like the interface. What I like most though: I can cancel my subscription online at any time. Let’s see how it goes.

Y Combinator: Startup News is like reddit, except more business oriented and less about religion and politics. Fun.
